I bought this mic hoping for a vocal mic. Listened to it at mars with acoustic guitar, but unfortunately only spoke in to it for a voice test. (yeah, maybe that was dumb) It does pretty good coupled with an ecm8000 for acoustic guitar. (20+ yr old Martin D-35, usually sounds good no matter what you do to it) But for vocals I'm not sure if it doesn't have the goods, or if I need a little guidance. It seems just a little sibilant AND dark sounding when singing directly into it. And off axis it loses a lot. Otherwise, it seems plenty sensitive. In fact, easy to overload on vocals. (and yes, I did see the suggestion for use as a doorstop on another thread) Best results so far: pop filter on top of the mic, and singing across the top of it, with an ecm8000 thrown in to capture high end and "air". Rest of the chain is Behringer mx602A mixer into Aardvark USB3 (line ins). I record only myself at home, (obviously with this gear, eh?) and the most important aspect to me is capturing decent guitars and vocals. Any ideas on how to get the most out of my el-cheapo set -up. Also, would the SP C-1 be a significant step up from the MXL? Or the SP B-1.
I am not seeking "colour", just accurate clean sound with no wierd overtones.

v63 vs v93

I'm wondering if this mic is any good for $70

what about the v93 is $90 I think.

The best thing you can do with the V63 is return it to Mars. It's pretty down right bad & you've pretty well nailed all the right reasons it's bad. so that says you know something about what your doing & what to listen for. I purchased one from Mars also not long after they started carrying them & came to the same conclusions by the next day & promptly exchanged it for the V67, which they no longer carry, but you could exchange for the V93 which would be a giant improvement. If you've not had it more than a month or so they will do an exchange. The SP C-1 or B-1 also are considerable improvements over the V63. I have a SP B1 & its very clean sounding & versatile as instrument & vocal mic. Sounds good on acoustic guitar. Has none of the harshness & sizzle typical of the V63 on vocals. The V93 is allso very clean sounding & versatile. It has a sweet sounding high end (not excessively hyped like the V63) & full bottom.

For just about any of the large diaphragm condensors you should be using a pop filter for vocals.

Thanks for the reply Knowdoubt,
As far as I can determine you seem right on target. Unfortunately I've had the mic a little too long. Maybe they'll take pity on me if I trade it for something for more $$. Also, judging from this experience, something with a roll-off switch would be nice. So maybe I'll have to chalk this one up as a learning experience. i,e: you get what you pay for. I don't suppose Alan would take it as a down payment on a C-1?! It may be good to record something with, and makes an excellent paperweight.

Mr. Brent Casey,
Are you out there? Are we missing something about this mic? Or does that pretty much sum it up?

Mr. omtayslick,

You have discerning ears, that is all. The V93 is a step up, indeed, although I will naturally be suggesting that you look into the SP line as well.
