I am ready to treat my studio. The question is how. I know how to build the bass traps diffusers and what not from Johns site SAE and some books. Thats all cool but how do I figure out where to put them. Diffussers usually go in the back of the room but where to place absorbers and stuff. I have no one to help me but my friendly neighborhood recording bbs. I know you need more, such as my room size and stuff. Where can I find this knowledge without having to explain how every corner is shaped?

Help

check in the back of recording mags and stuff. i think i remember seeing an ad for a place that you send the dimensions of the room to, and they tell you how to set everything up. I believe it was for a company that also sold difussers and stuff. I dont think they charge to much either, under 100 bux. look into it

Try this link:

It had some intersting info. Up until 2 days ago I did not know there was any such thing as a "bass trap". In fact it almost seems like a bunch of magical mumbo jumbo, I never knew it was possible to just diffuse bass... Why dont more theaters do this? I was at a THX certified theater and at times you could still hear bass from the one next door.

I cant wait to build some and see for myself, Can bass traps be used to help sound proof rooms? Am I going crazy?

Yes Brian01 - when you hang blankets on the wall you are absorbing the highs. Bass traps do the same to the bass. Just as the blankets make the room sound tighter, bass traps do the same in the bass frequencies.

BTW the theatre experience is a problem with sound transmission between rooms. Bass traps wouldn't help there - it's just cheap theatre construction!! ;);)

But will bass traps help to keep bass sound from carrying outside of a stand alone studio?

What sizes should I build to stop bass from kick drum and bass guitar? I was going to go for 2 12 inch and maybe 2 16 or 20 inches to round out the freq range.

Brian,

Bass traps are for room acoustic treatment. The design of your studio walls, ceiling and floor are intended to stop sound transmission to the outside. does it have a floating floor? double walls with extra insulation? all cracks, holes etc. caulked and sealed? these things are needed to soundproof your studio in both directions - sound coming in or going out. Carpets on the walls and floor, absorbers, etc. may muffle or reduce the sound volume, but they will not eliminate it.
