Right heres my plan.....to add spice to my mixes...but i need ur help :D

I wanna record both of my tunrtables(whist mixing) as separte tracks into cubase (so that i can mess around with affects and stuff)......

This is how i thought i could do it.....not sure if it will work.....

Plug each turnatable into a separte DJ mixer (yes i have two :D) and then plug each of those mixers into my mixing desk, so that i have a seperate track for each turntable, then hae the out put of the mixing desk going to my soundcard....the problem being my soundcard only has one input.....but it does have a digital input and a midi input.

How can I fiddle around with it so that it records each tracks seperatly??

Thanks :)

It is called an "EDITED MIX".

I don't use Cubase, I use Cakewalk 9.03, but the setup is the same :).

Say for instance, you wanted to make an 8 track mix.

Theoretically, you would want to have Track 1-5 for your music.

Track 6 for you acapellas.

Track 7 and 8 for your scratches.

Assign all of your tracks to record off of your sound card.

Arm Track 1 to record your first song.

Let the song play past the break or chorus.

Place a marker before the beginning of your break or chorus.

Unarm Track 1.

Arm Track 2 for RECORD.

GOTO your marker, press RECORD.

Start your blend with your second song on Track 2.

Repeat for Tracks 3-5.

Once you get to Track 5, start back on Track 1.

Keep repeating the process until you finish your Mixtape/MixCD.

I hope that helps. :D

You don't need to use 2 mixers. :)

Actually, you could use 1 turntable and 1 one mixer.

If you have any questions, just post me back.

good luck...

Alrite mate, thanks for your help....ill give it a go...

The only thing was...i was hoping to give it a more live feel, so that i was actually mixing manually, and not on the PC, is there a way to achieve this? Thanks.

Sure, DJ Strutt.

Instead of setting up multiple tracks.

Just setup 1 stereo track.

Then record the mix LIVE.

If you mess up, you can always go into the past on your track/rewind your vinyl/press play on your PC/match the record with the track/then auto punch (REC).

But.....

What you were asking in original post was this:

I wanna record both of my tunrtables(whist mixing) as separte tracks into cubase (so that i can mess around with affects and stuff)......

the problem being my soundcard only has one input.....but it does have a digital input and a midi input.

In order for you to do it that way, you would have to purchase a new soundcard with two (2) stereo INS.

It would be easier for you to do it the way I just described in THIS post.

post me back,

peace out... :)

you can probably do it with what you have right now: if your card has a stereo line in - then you can record '2' tracks - one of the R channel and one of the L channel

by 'mixing desk' are you talking about a mixing board?? if so then you can just run each turntable into its own channel on the board and then pan each channel - one L, one R - take the boards stereo outs into a 'Y' cable into your soundcard (Y cable = 2 mono jacks to 1 stereo jack - you can get whatever combination you need (eg. 2 1/4 inch mono to 1 stereo 1/8 inch)) this is assuming that your soundcard has an 1/8 inch line in (don't know that I've seen a card without one - except for higher end)

in cubase you just need to enable 2 tracks - one for your soundcard input L, one for soundcard input R

this way you'll maintain separation - although your signals coming in from the turntables will be mono - if you want 2 stereo signals you'll need a card with 2 stereo inputs (as SPINSTERWUN already said) - you can create 'faux' stereo once the tracks are recorded by copying the track and pasting it into another track and then panning both tracks either L or R

thanks for the help.......:)

Ive have a Midi Man Audio Phile sound card. which has normall hi-fi type inputs, like a red and white stero input sort of thing :P .

It has a digital input as well, can i convert phono to digital?? So i can have two stero inputs??

Cheers :)

'phono to digital'??? - the only way I can think of to do this would be to get some type of A/D converter to run your turntable into before running into your digital inputs

That setup will not work :( .

p.s.

I will explain that to you all later on today (I am a bit intoxicated :D ).

It's a few hours later, but I'm back...

For starters...

The signal coming out of the turntables is not strong enough to go directly in to a mixing console.

If you did/could use a mixing console and not your dj mixer, you would have to blend/mix using the channels (up & down). So, you would not be able to use a cross fader.
That is cool if you are mixing "house music", but it's not cool if you are mixing "hip-hop". You won't be able to scratch etc.

Plus, some people don't know how to mix "UP & DOWN", instead of "LEFT to RIGHT".

peace
