Hi,

Basically I want to create my own recording facility (i cant really call it a studio). Here is my idea, could you please tell me if it will (a) work or (b) there's a better way.

Instruments-------patch bay-------16 track mixer--------laptop

I have been in a recording studio and when they adjust the sliders/dials on the mixer this adjusts the slider/dials on the computer monitor. The reason I don't want to control everything from the PC is that i found it far to fiddly and you can't get the proper sound you want as when you adjust it slightly with a 'proper' mixer.

If I have named something incorrectly could you please inform me so I don't spend ages on the internet searching for a 16 track mixer for example when i need a 16 track recorder.

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.

Thanks.
Tom Lewis.

The first thing I would do is find yourself a good book or two on the subject. Do alot of reading and then start putting and equipment list together. Set yourself a budget and try and stick with it. There are many platforms to choose from (pro-tools, cubase......) that will allow you to interface with a control surface....Good Luck

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha", he laughs bitterly.

Seriously though tomlewis86, it sounds like what you are talking about is not a mixer but instead a control surface. Assuming you want to control the software from the mixer. Some control surfaces have audio inputs and function at least in part like audio mixers, others do not.

Do you have a particular mixer/control surface in mind?
