I don't know if I caught your previous question, but...
the 688 is quite complicated to operate, at first glance. Once you've gotten the gist of assignments through buttons, as read on the LCD display, it gets easier.
Mind you, I don't claim to be any sort of expert, although I have the 688 *(in storage), and the 688 manual *(readily available). When testing my own 688, in it's most basic sense, I deduced how to assign inputs to tracks, whereupon I tested recording function to 8-tracks simultaneously using one guitar input, (without benefit of the manual at the time).
Such is the extent of my hands-on experience with the 688, the saving grace of which, presently, is that I have the manual in a handy place that's accessible for quick reference.

The bottom line is, that the manual is most helpful in the case of the 688, which must be the hardest Portastudio to figure out, ever.
