Can I just buy a mixing board and hook up all my instrument and mics to the mixing board and then hook the mixing board up to my soundcard to input the music into the computer for editing.

thanks!

thanks for the help! How can u hook them up wrong?
That leads to my next question, what is the best mixing board to get for around $500 dollars.

Very easily.

The Mackie line has one that's around the $500 mark, probably about the best you can do for that price.

There are many ways to hook it up wrong. If it sounds good then your probably doing it right.

If you are ready to spend $500 on a mixer then I'd reccomend getting the Roland Studio Pack for $700.

It will give you a digital mixer, digital sound card and Logic Audio software. There is no better deal for the price. You can record up to 8 tracks at a time, 24 stereo tracks total. The mixer is very clean and has great built in 24bit effects.

The mackie is a great mixer but down the road you will still need a better sound card and some software.

Is it better to get a mixer or a digital recorder to attach to your computer?

THankyou for answering my ( what are probably obvious) questions!

The computer will be your digital recorder. The mixer will help you err, mix, what ever is coming in or out of the computer.

The roland pack is nice because it gives you a lot of flexibility but it's not that easy if you've never used a mixer before.

If you want to start small and simple get a Mackie 1202VLZ hooked up to your soundcard and CoolEditPro software. That is probably the most simple setup with good quality.

Just sayin u have 500 to spen doesnt give me a lot of clue of what u want to buy just how much u wan to spend! How many inputs etc do u want on the mixer?? I would recomend a mackie but if u are on a budget and need many inputs I would say a Behringer as they are a ver price point mixer!
