Hi!

I hope this community can help me. I got a hold of this desk for cheap (not stolen!) but have no idea what is it and what it can be used for exactly (recording/mixing). My search on the internet hasn't revealed much to me - can you help?

Also, it is kept in a home-studio (my parents) which is a 6x6m (19x19 foot) room which is divided into 3 rooms by double-thick walls. There are 6 XLR cables connecting to the drum room and guitar room which feedback into the 'control room'. There are also multiple headphone jacks in each room.

So my questions are:

-What is this desk I've got?
-What can it be used for?
-Can it be used to mix all the mics coming from the drums and guitar for it come out in the headphones?
-How many more mics do I require for an ok set-up?
-Anything else this newbie has missed, please, chip in.

I am completely new to this, but I am set on learning as much as I can. If you can also point me in the direction of books/webpages to read up on the basics it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

How can you have all this stuff 'in your parent's house' and not have anyone to show you how to work it?
If you're brand new to all this, you've got a steep learning curve ahead. I'd suggest you find someone local who can work with you, showing you all the steps.

Too bad about the baby poop-green paint. :o

That mixer is designed for running stage monitor mixes, it wont be much use in a studio, so I would sell it and buy something that is designed for a studio.

It has a lot of mono sends (10) and also has a mic splitter built in, so as a monitor mixer it is the bees knees. It has no stereo bus so you can't do a mix on it, well not easily.

Thank you for your feedback so far.

Yes I do understand the disbelief of having this type of set-up and no knowledge; it was built and used by much older siblings 10-12 years ago (when I was around 10) who have since moved out and on (in different cities/countries). It was then used as storage space for the last 7-8 years with a strict 'do not move anything' in place. Having moved back to the parents for personal reasons and had the room recently cleared I thought I may as well put it to good use. So here we are :)

Where was the disbelief? I explained what desk you had?

Every band should have a monitor mixer. I hate monitor sends from FOH. worse yet, I hate being the sound guy trying to mix the stage monitors from FOH. "Up a little bit, no down a little bit. That's good. Well it was good a second ago, but now it sucks..." Do it yourself goddamnmmmit.

If you think you will ever be in a band and gigging, keep it!! :)

If you want to do some recording, you need to get an audio interface (assume you already have a usable computer).
