I and my bandmates are just getting started recording and I really need help with drums...I purchased a zoom mrs-8 digital recorder and only have the ability to record 2 inputs at once. I have an understanding that you should place 2 overhead mics on the kit, and try to get a good sound out of that first...and then work with your kick, snare and toms. I don't know if that is correct, maybe somebody can help me...and how should i record this only on two inputs? Through a mixer was my first guess, but i am really lost with what mics to use and how to do this. Please lend me some experienced advice. Thanks!!

(it would very important that you use a click track to do this). But you could try the 2 overheads. Then go back and overdub the kick and snare. Just a thought. But I would actually prefer to record each drum on it's own track then dub in the fills on 2 tracks. But you would need more tracks than what you have. My .02
