Help - VSTis silent when recording!

I heart guitars!
...I've checked in the documentation, and I'm either thick or lazy, but I can't find anything about this, so I was wondering if you guys could help me.

When I'm recording synth or drum parts using my VSTis, I can't get any sound (which obviously makes playing somewhat awkward). The note data is being recorded as normal, and the sounds play back OK. It's just during recording that I don't get anything.

I'm using an Edirol PCR-1 (mini-keys/USB interface) and an Edirol UM-2 (USB midi interface) and the problem's the same whichever of the two I'm using. There's undoubtedly some simple switch hiding somewhere, but I'll be buggered if I can find it.

Help me keep what hair I have left...

Did you activate the little yellow speaker icon to put the channel in input monitoring mode?
 
select file, then preferences, then midi. make sure that you have the midi thru active box ticked, then select apply. hope this helps mate.
