Hey all. Just need some info here. Ok, if I was to buy a mixing board with USB or firewire connectivity, can I record multiple channels into the computer at the same time. Can I record 8 separate tracks at once to the computer, or how does this work??

Thanks a lot!!!

using a mixer will allow recording of multiple tracks but it will only record to one track on your software unless you have multiple outputs and multiple inputs with software capable of doing so.

If thats what the specs say, yea you can. There are firewire mixers out there that will record 8 tracks at a time. Not sure about USB. What model did you have in mind?

I would not recomment using USB for more than about two channels of audio at a time. Between the extra CPU utilization and various flaws in the USB audio spec, it has a tendency to be pretty unreliable with large numbers of channels if it works at all.

FireWire has no problem dealing with dozens of input and output channels simultaneously. Well, at least a couple dozen. Beyond that, you might start to run into problems because some drivers reserve more bandwidth than the device really needs, making that bandwidth unavailable to other devices. Even still, though, that's a lot of I/O. :D
