HELP! Tascam 488 bizarro repair-requiring disaster.

I have a Tascam 488 mkII that I purchased used from a recordist on eBay. It's been working like a dream for the last couple weeks, until just recently (yesterday), when I turned it on and nothing happened-- no lights, functions, nada. Tried it again and same, except sound started coming out-- from the inside of the machine. Unplugged from all audio equipment. Sounds like a kind of "sizzling." What the devil do I do? Did it short? I am taking it in to get fixed today, but before the guy racks up the fees, I want to see if you guys have any info!

Sounds like your standard garden variety power supply short.

Did any liquid or conductive foreign object fall into the power section of the Porta?

Best to have a tech check it out.
