help - stuck keys with mk-149

I'm a complete newbie as regards midi controllers, a friend lent me his mk-149 which he has never used and has sat in his house for a year and a half. I just plugged it in and about every third note i press does't release, ie it just keeps playing until i play it again
Is there something basic I'm doing wrong or is there something wrong on a hardware level? Any guesses appreciated

...if its any help the lcd display is constantly flickering slightly, would it do this if something was stuck maybe?
