Hi guyz,

I just bought Window XP to upgrade my DAW, but I'm a little worried about "upgrading" my OS. I currently run Windows 2000 and I have 3 harddrives. One 80Gb system drive, one 20 Gb storage drive, and one 40Gb empty drive. I would like to install XP on the empty 40 Gb, so I can run both OSs for a while until I'm satisfied I will like XP enough to redo my computer.

How do I go about installing Windowes on only the 40Gb drive INSTEAD of "upgrading' my current OS?

Thanx for your input.

you will probably get a post soon saying 'its ease, all you have to do is...'

this is not it.

you will probably like xp better, maybe. but if you put it on a separate drive, your software will have to be installed to it for its registry to know what is there and the proper settings to run correctly, same for dual boot on the system drive.

I have dual boot on one of my systems, but that is xp and red hat linux, and no aps (save mozilla) are common.

the version you have, does it include sp2, or will you have to update after install?

if you are using ntfs (NT File System), and your system is running reliably, I would put it off till I might be going to upgrade harddrives or motherboard.

why not use that as a good excuse to wait on win xp 64 and a dual core amd 64!

I am currently running AMD Athlon64......
The XP is professional without any service packs, I will have to update after install....

To avoid problems unplug all of your harddrives. Set the 40gb as the "Master" with the jumpers on the back. Plug it back in. Format the drive. Usually you will get a disc with the drive that has a formatting utility. Then install XP [this will require you to set the CD drive as the first boot device in the bios]. Once this is done set your 80gb as the slave and plug it back in [you will also need to reset your device boot order in the bios-40gb ="Master"]. As was pointed out by Rstiltskin you will need to reinstall your software on the 40gb. Now you can test the new OS and if you don't like it just switch the drives to 80gb="Master" and it will boot with your old OS.

Thankyou, that is exactly what I will do, I just forgot exactly how to install on the empty 40Gb without messing up my 80Gb 2000 system drive.
