HELP: recording with mics

Hi,
I'm just wondering if plugging my mic in to my 4 track recorder with a 1/4" jack instead of an XLR connector would make much of a differnt in the quality of the recording.

1/4" inputs are going to be line level - Not mic level.

So yes, it's going to make a *huge* difference in quality - This is what preamps are for...

Ah ok, well I'm new at all this so I'm not sure how preamps and that work. Could you explain the easiest/cheapest way that I can get XLR quality recording with the gear I have? (And what other gear I need to get) I have 3 mics, I'm getting a cheap mixer, and a 4 track digital recorder (Zoom MSR-4).
