I'm a newbie to PC recording and I've taken the plunge and purchased the M-Audio Firewire 410 to use with my laptop.

I've installed it but I can't get any audio to play through it! When I try and use a package such as Ableton Live Delta it loads up ok but becomes unresponsive??? I tried running itunes/windows media/musyz and still no audio will play??

I'm not sure if it's my system or if my hard drive needs upgrading?? I checked M-audio site and it's mentions some trouble with Laptop Hard Drives not being 7200 rpm.

My system is AMD 1500+, 256 MB ram and 20 gig hard drive.

Thanks!

Check what firewire chip your laptop uses. From what I've heard the Firewire 410 won't work with firewire ports based on a NEC chip.
If that's the problem, check ebay for cardbus firewire interfaces. Shouldn't be too expensive.
Hard drives not being 7200rpm should not be an issue when you're trying to record or playback just a handful of tracks

many thanks christiaan,

I'm using a Unibrain FireCard 400, I've checked the packaging and can't find what chipset it is. Any Ideas on how to check?

Ta!

Checked out the card and it's using a Texas Instruments chip - not an NEC one??? I've tried to contact M-Audio but no response. help!

Can't really afford to buy a new PC any suggestions??
