I have a question reguarding bits of workstations. I have a yamaha 2816 that can record 8 tracks at once on 16 and 24 bit, but can only play back only 8 tracks while recording on 24 bit. BUt on 16 bit it can record and play back all the tracks. I was wondering if i would really notice a difference in quality between 24 and 16 bit. and if so, can someone explain specifically how different it would sound? Thank you

24bit advantages:

•smoother fade outs
•less grungy reverb tails
•better stereo imaging
•less degradation of audio due to rounding errors
•more useable dynamic range
•less worry about recording everything "hot"

16 bit advantages:

•smaller data files

Yo Mentil of 6-9:

You need to record on your 2816 in 16 bit 44 to do CD's. The manual tells you that and "it is understandable."

However, if you want to do stuff in 24 bit, you can record and mix and run it out the back end of the 2816 onto tape or DAT and you will get a pretty good sound.

You will need a good tape deck or the digital tape box. I use a Sony ES dual tape deck and it can take some "hot" feeds which does make for a good quality tape. This deck has an adjustable record level so I can play around until I find the best levels.

FYI, I just got a Quiklok 400 stand for my 2816 and it's great. Sure beats the flat top of my Leslie speaker. Found the item on sale for 100 bucks and only 5 dollars for shipping. Other prices were 20 bucks higher with bigger shipping charges.

All the other info that Littledog gave you is good information too.
