Whats up everyone...I need a little bit of help. I've always been into the hip hop vibe, I love the beats, the whole ordeal, and one day would love to get into the industry by producing, well lately, I've fallen in love with some old school hip hop, well I am also interested in making some of my beats cause I got some people that flow, I was wondering if someone could give me the basis and idea of what kinda home equipment I should get, like I know I need a mixer, recorder, and stuff...but what are the other equipment that u need to actually make the beats with the mixer...if it makes any sense...I really need some help and input..thanks...Lil' Texas!!

before you buy anything, i would suggest you find a copy of russel simmons' biography and read it cover to cover.

make sure you really love this ish, cause we've got a LOT of fakers out here.

one.

thanks, i guess....i know what i love, and how i feel about it. i dont think i need to read a biography to tell what ima do...but thanks anyway.

U first want to decide:

1. Ur budget
2. If you want to record into the computer or a stand alone recorder.
3. If computer recording, does the intended computer have enuff power and space.
4. The max # of sources to you intend to record at one time.
5. Hardware instruments, software or both?

U dont got to read a Russell Simmons book, but u got to be ready to read (equipment manuals, software manuals, tips on techique, product reviews).

Its alot of work but passion and patience will keep you on track.

Holla back with that info.

my bad texas.
didn't mean to offend you at all.
you just can't throw a rock these days without hitting a cat who thinks/or wants to be a "producer".
it's all about the love and respecting those who've laid the path for you.
talent and hustle is all you really need, no books.

best of luck to you. you'll find a wealth of info in this bbs and a lot of folks who are really doing their thing.

p.s.- hi d ho is giving you the goods. best bet is to listen to people like that and not some salesman at your local guitar center. test drive everything you can before you purchase. IBTHH.

I think you've got some good advice here. But, I would ask a question and I wanna throw some thoughts out too.

First, are you a musician or artist of any kind?

The reason I ask is because Hiphop is a sub-group of music, just like Rock or Jazz or Gospel. The etails are different but a lot of the creative issues are the same. If you become a beatmaker, DJ, producer, or what have you, you are on the path to becoming a musician, not a hiphopper. In my opinion a Hiphopper is just a consumer. You want to create. So, please don't limit yourself to the definitions that currently apply. Tomorrow is definitely gonna be different than today.

And I understand what you mean by how you feel about it, but now, since you wanna do this, you've gotta deal with what and how you "think" about it. I am rolling this way because you said you wanted to get into the "industry," not the community or into the scene or into the music. So, on one hnd Leonard's idea is actually a good one. On the other hand, Hi-Di-Hoe is right too.

All that said, what do you really wanna do? I mean, do you have a clean idea of what kind of music you wanna craete that isn't what somebody else already does? Is there something in your head hat doesn't already exist in the world? Can you add something to the industry or culture? Do you know enough to begin to search out for the kind of questions you need to ask. Have you been reading mags or book or online posts about music? Are you hooked into your community's music scene? Know any musicians whom you can work with and who can serve as your mentor? Do you have monies saved up to cop the gear you'll need?

These are important questions and some way during our careers as artists we deal with all of them.

Please don't feel I'm dissing. I'm just posing some key ideas and questions.

Hell, Im looking for the next Premo.

Peace.

man that was concise and well-said, and valid. I'm feeling like a mentor would be a good thing to find. but also they say that teachers come when they're needed or whatever. we'll see.

Well-said.
