So, I have a song pretty close to done. Working on the vocal tracks when I have a sudden inspiration on the melody. I run to my studio, open Sonar 4, click to open the project, and I keep getting a message that "The file you are trying to open is not compatable with this version of Sonar."

WHAT!!!! I've listened to it and worked with it just fine before. All my other projects open just fine. But for some reason, this one won't open. Have I lost it for good? Do I have to reconstruct it?

Any ideas? Please help!!! ARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!! :(

Worst case you should be able to reconstruct it (assuming you have been saving it as a project file and not a bundle file). The wave files associated with it should still be on your hard drive, and if you were using "per project" method of saving, they will all be in one directory.

However, try opening it in Safe Mode first by holdoing down the shift key while opening it. It could be a plugin that is causing the problem. Opening in safe mode will prompt you to load plugins one at a time. Don't load any the first time, just to see if you can get the project opened. If it works, load them one at a time until you find the problem.

If that fails, you can also contact CW Tech Support. Sometimes they will have you send the project file to them to diagnose the problem.

I got the same thing on a project and I learned a couple things:

1) The project does need to be reconstructed. It is virtually impossible to save the file.

2) ALWAYS BACKUP PROJECTS FREQUENTLY. (This is THE most important thing)

I had over 1000 man hours into a project when this happened to me and I got burned bad. So I had to reconstruct the whole thing...and oddly (because this one project is the ONLY work that this has happened on) it happened again.

The difference?

The first time I'd not backed up. The second time I had. Time difference was tens of hours.

Hard lessons learned, but valuable ones. Spend the short amount of time doing the routine housekeeping, save the huge amount of fubar time.

Best-

K
