I need help getting a set-up for Vocals in band practice: i dont want to run my vocals through a guitar amp. But dont have the big$ for even a Cheapo PA ($199) Im wondering what else i could do that is relatively cheap but will still give me enough volume without sacraficing the quality of vocals!
-thanks

Thats an age old problem, Unfortunately you will probably not find anything even useful enough in that pricerange. I would suggest that you find a powered monitor used around the 300w range and use that for your own reference for practice. Then as you build up enough money you can still use that as a monitor in the future when you have a pa, anything less would be a waste of time and $$. + make sure you are getting something with a compression driver and not a piezo. Some cheap models to look out for are Gemini GX250 and GX350, and the american audio equivalent. DB also makes some good ones as do Wharfedale pro (EVPX12MP)

thanks for the advice on the monitors, now do i have to get a mixer to run my mic (Shure sm58s) into- then the monitor to the mixer?

In most cases you will be able to plug your mic directly . That is if the model you endup with has a mic/line level switch as most will. Only problem being, no verb or effects this way. Probably not too much of a problem, given your situation.
