Hey everyone, I want to ask you guys to help me decipher something I am unsure about. I've been doing some research on the use of recording technology as a creative tool. Recently, a particular Nine Inch Nails song caught my attention. At the end of Closer to God (cant post links, look for it in youtube) , around the 4 minute mark, the song starts to distort gradually, to the point where it's almost inaudible, just a dense mass of noise. I wonder how this effect was achieved?
My initial hypothesis was that the overall level of the track was gradually increased, distorting the wave as it surpassed the 0 DB mark. However, at closer inspection, the wave doesn't seem flattened. I did come across a pattern in the wave though, but i can't really tell what it is.

Maybe a decrease in resolution somehow? Does anyone have any idea on waht causes this effect?
Thank you in advance.
