Thanks a lot for the suggestions. Does anyone have recommendations for possibly more reliable interfaces or maybe field recorders? I'm regretting going for this Tascam unit only for its cheap price :(

Oh and I suppose it would be helpful to know how the sound compares to that from using a cheap interface with its onboard stuff. My target as I mentioned way above is "acceptable" quality, i.e. good enough that most people can't tell it wasn't "professional".

Acceptable quality might be misleading terminology wise. It could just mean "better" than cell phone quality. Which doesn't really imply much. Given our otherwise acceptance of cell phone to 911 to nightly news to ???

Interfaces are "capable" of quality recordings. It just has a lot of competition for resources to get there from here. In terms of windows the competition per say might be unavoidable. Linux IMO offers a few more options to control your environment. Maybe not the best of available capture mechanisms. But you can always take the resulting content to windows after the fact to be mastered.

A field recorder (like the H4n) is but one of many options to take the more "must happen, cannot fail" options off the computer. If you don't need that, then no big deal. But having remote power and other options is hardly a negative in most situations.
