for example if i plug my bass guitar into the first xlr / 1/4 comno jack it only records in the left channel! if i plug it into the second jack it goes through the right.. its not a software problem because i was getting this in soundforge and in ableton

i wanted to record some stuff this weekend and this problem has stopped me from doing so

yes the 1/4 cables are stereo

yes the 1/4 cables are stereo

The inputs are mono, though... and what about the bass? Does it have a stereo jack? That would be rather unusual...

its a modified squier p-bass, it has one 1/4 output jack - is it only possible to record in one channel with it?

edit: the problem also happens with my condenser mic - it has an xlr connection and only records in mono

Well .... they are single inputs, so typically it would be a mono signal.
Must be that the OmniStudio treats those two inputs as the the two separate stereo channels of a standard soundcard. Hence one being left and the other being right. Honestly, I don't know .... never used one. Maybe there is an option to tailor how the inputs are treated within whatever control panel or mixer applet that controls the OmniStudio within the computer's GUI.
Normally when you record a single output source to a single input, you record a mono track and pan that track to fit in the stereo image as you see fit.
If for some odd reason you are wishing to record single sources to a stereo track, you would most likely need to use a mixer and feed it's stereo output to both of the inputs of the OmniStudio. Or at the very least, use a Y cable to split the single source output to two.

but it doesnt explain why my mic records in mono only

Because it's the same deal. Unless the mic is a stereo mic and has two outputs, it's a single source (mono).

Hey .... no apologies needed. We all start somewhere.
One of these days you'll be answering questions instead of asking them.
This is a great place to learn and help others.
Happy recording!
