i have three questions about recording.
1)What is the best way to record a song in perfect time (using a metronome and what kind), and what instruments should be recorded first?

2)If i want my three tom mics to go into the same input of my mixer, how would i got about doing that?

3)I have a thin tight sounding bass drum, but im trying to get a really fat punchy sound, and i record it with a beta 52.
Thank you

1. Use a drum machine or record a metronome. Any kind will do.

2. You can't. Every mic needs it's own input with a preamp.

3. Get a kick drum with a fat and punchy sound. Or try building a tunnel in front of the kick with some heavy blankets or cushions and mic the end of the tunnel.

can u explain why i cant input three mics nto the same input and also, would a good preamp help me get a fatter bass drum sound?

you could put three mics into one input ..... if you ran them through their own mixer first. every microphone needs it's own preamp.

what kind of mic are you using for the kick drum now?

i use a beta 52. so what would happen if i ran three mic cables into one input on my mixer?

that would be impossible, without submixing them first.

thanks, so basically they dont make connectors for two xlrs to turn into one?

i'm sure you could get one, or make one, but it would be FAR from ideal. you would not be able to adjust each mic's level on its own, so you'd be at the mercy of the sensitivity/placement of the mic for its volume. plus that may bring up impedance issues with the preamp.

well thats what im talking about, i have the two top toms with the exact same mic placement and they are at equal volumes so i was wondering where i could get or make something two join two cables,

also you'd probably want to pan the toms L/R somewhat ... can't do that on one channel

aright so does anyone have any ideas on drum mic setup then with what i have? My setup is as follows; I have a yamaha yd drum set with an extra crash and splash. I mic the toms with three sm57s, the bass with a beta 52, the overheads with two octava mc012s, the snare with a sm58 on top, and the hi ht with a ksm 27. I only have six inputs on my mixer and since they hav decent preamps i like to get as many of my mics through these preamps, then i go to a yamaha 2816 which i can only use seven of the inputs on. any suggestions would help, thank you

my first instinct would be to eliminate the hi-hat mic, and that way you could use the extra preamp on one of your toms.

alternatively, with all the dirt-cheap mixers out there these days from companies like Mackie and Behringer, you have two obvious options that shouldn't cost you very much:

1) Buy a mixer with more inputs/preamps, then sell your current mixer to make up part of the price.

2) Get one of those little sub-$100 mixers with just 4 preamps on them, and use it as a submixer into your current board.

The larger mixer solution is far more preferable, if for no other reason (aside from better signal path) than you'll be able to pan your toms, which you can't do if they are all on one channel.

thanks ya i was thiniking of going with a soundcraft with like 10 channels, but i dont know howmuch price i could make up by selling my 1402 vlz mackie.

You might try my trick, I picked up a couple of small mic mixers (both w/4 inputs and stereo/mono outs) for around $50 each. That gave me 8 lines for the drums where I origionaly had 2. It took a bit of fine tuning to get the mix just right but once you get a set up that works its easy to control from 2 (right and left) chanels on the main mixer. I can't say this would solve your problem but thats how I solved mine. Dani
