Hello! Please check out this mix off my bands first EP, I am producing it myself it would be really helpful if you guys could comment on the mix and tell me how i could make it better. I've attached the song.
Thanks in advance!

Cool tune, I wasn't a fan of the distortion though. Maybe just less of it would seem more in place, now that I think about it. I really liked the instrument in the end, left panned, that cuts in and out...cool effect. The first thing I thought was that the snare needed something. It seemed too hollow and dead, to me anyway. I'm not a drummer, and not too experienced with mixing, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. I was really hoping for some vox too...I had a good melody going in my head. ha. nice job though!

Hey! thanks a lot for replying :) I programmed the drums maybe thats why they sound so thin? do you have any tip on how to add more body to programmed drums?
Thanks!

The background instruments during the first two minutes are a little too low, when the distorted guitar kicks in (probably too much distortion) the crash over on the right side is too loud and sounds wrong when its going at the same time as the snare (or tom, couldn't tell) around 3:10. You might try a different snare in SD, this one is very far back with a lot of metal-snare sound.

There are some guys here with more drum mixing experience. Mine is all digital as well, with Superior Drummer 2. Unless someone thinks you need the whole kit re-mixed, I would just work on the snare buses alone. Again though, I could be misled, and the snare is fine for this type of sound. If it were me, however, I would work that EQ, some compression, and fiddle with the bleed from the other mics. It just seems to be smack dead center (which is where it usually should be), but without any kind of body or fullness to the hits. Weak-sounding maybe? See what some other guys say;this is just the opinion of a guitar player and songwriter. Oh, and there might be some forums in here somewhere regarding drum/programmed drum mixing. They might be able to help more in detail if you decide on changing anything.

Thanks a lot for replying, I will definitely work on that and post another mix soon! please let me know if you find any other oddities

Hey! I used superior drummer as well! The snare is too thin for me too! i will try sending it to more buses and play around with it thanks a lot for the tips! I will definitely look for the forum.
cheers!

By the way should I rerecord guitars with a low gain amp or should I turn down the guitars in the mix. What do you recommend?

ah, ok then. I would try the Roland or Slingerland snares (if you have the standard NY Avatar kit). With a splash of "drum booth" verb, but turned down quite a bit. It only needs a little. Try adding some transients and comp to the snare mix channels. Or maybe the "natural room" mix preset on the SD mixer (i think that's what it's called).
