Starting small...

Hi guys, first of all let me introduce myself. I’m Tom, a 26 year old guitarist (and very poor keyboard player) with no history of recording, and a basic understanding of computers.

What I would like to do initially is start to record some demos of songs I’ve written. I would also like to use something like BFD to make drum tracks so I can play guitar, bass and occasional keyboards over the top. In time I would like to add vocals to the mix, but at the minute this is not high on the list of things I’d like to do. Ideally I’d like to start with 8 available tracks. Obviously sound quality is an issue, but I’m not looking for a polished pro sound yet. I’d like to be able to throw together a simple drum pattern and ‘plug in and play’ so I can capture ideas fairly quickly. Ideally I’d like to not mic up amps initially as I’d imagine that makes things more expensive.

I’m looking to record ‘rock’ style live stuff rather than dance/hip hop stuff.

At the minute all I own is a Toshiba laptop (about 9months old-3GB of RAM) which I use daily for university work, internet etc. I also own a MIDI keyboard which a friend gave to me, and some monitors.

My budget is ‘as cheap as possible’! Using the current exchange rate I’m looking to spend around $400 (I’m from the UK).

What I would like to know is, what would you guys recommend I need to buy? Do I need to get a new computer? Should I use a porta studio instead? Ideally I’d like to go with software so I can expand and add more as I build over time, but you guys are the experts!

If I’ve missed anything you need to know to help me please ask, I’d really appreciate your help.

Thank you in advance! :)

If you want to expand over time you'll end up selling the porta studio real quick. I dont know the specs of your laptop but you may be able to get away with using your laptop for some simple recording and processing. My experience with laptops for recording is that they can get really hot really quick. But that may depend on the laptop. I would recommend getting a firewire interface around the $400 to $500 range. They generally come with basic sequencer software which will get you started. The saffire pro 40 has eight mic/line inputs and eight line outputs, two of the line inputs have an instrument switch for guitar. Then you will definitely want to get a workhorse of a computer.

I would get a full duplex audio interface, your laptop should be fine. The Alesis multimix 8 USB 2.0 and the Zoom of similar configuration are both in your price range.

And for software, if you haven't already get Reaper

Well, you might. But if you get a digital portastudio you can not only use outboard {that is, separate} equipment, you'll also have editing facilities that you wouldn't have with a tape portastudio. And as a complete beginner, it would enable you to get used to the process of multitracking.
That said, the computer route is the way most of the people here have gone and only an analogue die hard would honestly argue that digital is the devil incarnate. Personally, I'm a {digital} portastudio kind of guy and I'll generally come out to bat for them but that's purely personal preference. Even I have to admit that looking at things futuristically, computer is probably your best option.

You can get a good quality interface with 2 inputs for about 150$ and that would come with software and the firewire cable that you would need, that is if you can get away with using only 2 inputs.

Thanks guys you've all been really helpful!
