Help Needed Fast - Recording Now!

hey were setting up a home studio to demo a song, ragged a mixer of a friend

behringer XENXYX 12 input mixer
samson 5kit drum mic set
shure sm57
various other vocal mics
sony studio monitors
tascam studio monitors


right anyway, were getting annoying hissing from the mixer for no reason, it must be the cable from the computer to the mixer because we played monitoring through headphones into the mixer and no hissing.

it has a L&R output but i dont have two inputs in my laptop, so could that be the hissing, or is it the cable? a guy suggested it may be my soundcard but thats not right i dont think because i never have problems with one mic going straight into the computer?

OK, let me get this straight - you've got two outputs on a mixing desk going into a mic input on a PC?
 
yeah. someone said it may be the behringer preamps but i dont think they can be this terrible
 
I'm no expert, but if anything, it's probably too much signal from the outputs on the mixer causing all the hiss.

How bad is it? Is it only affected when you plug anything else into the mixer?
 
If there is no hiss in the headphones plugged into the mixer, then it is highly likely to be the pre-amps. (It may have been, if, say, a channel had been turned full up at the gain. But you would have heard this in headphones.)

More than likely, it is associated with the connection to the PC, i.e. a line level ouput from the mixer going into a mic level input of the PC. It may also be the soundcard in the computer.

Does the XENYX have a USB output? If so, use that.
 
no it doesnt have a USB port, i have learnt now that im definately going for a USB mixer when i purchase one soon to prevent this happening!

so what do you reccomend i do to try and fuigure out what's wrong?
 
I've got an idea!

When I used to use my mic input before getting a dedicated sound card, I would find that there was a microphone boost setting on the card.

Go to:

Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Devices.

Check the properties, and you should see a bunch of faders. Click on the properties for the microphone and check to see if microphone boost is enabled. If it is, turn it off and see if it fixes the issue.
