HELP ....Need some advice

I have been playing around with home recording for a couple of years, but nothing serious so my learning curve is better than before. I just purchased a Fantom G8 and interface it with a Core 2 Quad (Q9650) and 8gb of Kingston dual channel ram. I have a SSD drive and am running windows 7 64bit. I have an Asus Xonar D2X PCI-E card that locks up when I try and record anything more than 2 stereo tracks at 24/96. I think it's the latency thing. I am going to purchase an EMU 1212 (pci) to try and get around that. Right now for some reason Sonar X1 won't let me change the bit or sample rate past 16/96. Before (under Windows 7 32 bit) it was fine, I could get 2 tracks, but since I upgraded to the 64bit version I have noticed some stuff does not work as well. I do have the latest drivers for everything, but I didn't do a clean install...I just re-installed the OS over the 32 bit version. I noticed that Windows created a folder called Windows.old. I just learned that I don't have to use analog plugs anymore...I can just hook the Fantom up to the computer through the USB port and presto...no more AC hum! I guess what I am asking is what advice anyone can offer me about tweaking this system so I can get some stability out of it. The motherboard in the computer is an Asus P5K Premium/WiFi AP.

I'd just wait until you get your EMU interface. Your soundcard is most definitely the weak link in the chain.
 
What FunkDaddy says ^^^^.

The Xonar is good for gaming, but is not purpose built for recording.

I might add that you are not gaining anything significant by recording at 24/96. If you can change this, you should consider 24/44.
 
Thx for the advic...I got the EMU 1212m card today and did a fresh install, loaded all the drivers and it sounds excellent. I am going to take your advice Funk Daddy and record at 24/44. I just have to learn about this EMu DSP Mixer...almost Chineese for me. Again..thx.
PS - what is your impression of Sonar X1?
