Help!! My Yamaha 4-track tape is broken!

I don't know if anyone can figure out this problem for me, but here goes:

My 4-track tape recorder does not seem to want to play. I push play (or even record) and all it does is fast forward (I don't think even the heads come down) and then I can't even stop it I have to eject it or shut it off. I can push rewind and FF and those work separately but play doesn't work!!

Mine is a Yamaha MT44D (it is an older model from the eighties). I actually just got this a couple weeks ago used from someone and it worked just fine until today. I don't know what's wrong with it.

Can anyone help me out? Anyone have a similar problem? This is my first multitrack recorder and I want to get back to recording some songs!

Have you cleaned it. The oxide from the tape builds up on the pinch roller and capstan. Get some isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds from the drug store and give the whole tape path a good clean. See hoe it goes then.
