Me? I put a lot of money into analog recording, but now I'm laid off and broke.

Him? He's flush (but a cheapskate) and finally ready to get into digital recording.

He has a new low-end Dell Dimension 2+ MHz P4 box with 256 RAM running Win XP. He knows he'll probably have to get a dedicated hard drive for music.

He wants to buy a decent soundcard with the following capabilities:

1) Good sounding converters, preferably 96k 20+ bits
2) He only needs a stereo pair of inputs, a stereo pair of outs. Of course more is fine, but not required.
3) Spdif out in nice so he and I can share via my DAT
4) He needs MIDI and it seems to me that a card providing a/d conversion and MIDI would be less hassle than trying to juggle two cards from potentially hostile vendors (correct this assumption if wrong).

I recommended n-track to start off with, as I understand it is pretty powerful for the money (although lots of these soundcards have crippleware for recording).

The MIDI requirement appears to be only addressable by MIDIman, until you get to MOTU and the higher end Event stuff. I figured that the Delta Audiophile 2496 was the thing for him, but I am hesitant to start throwing his money around without affirmation from guys with more digital experience.

I'll loan him an SM57 and my old Art Tube Pre to get started.

Whaddya think? Is there another card for less than $400 he should be looking at?

first off, todzilla is a great name!

secondly, i see a lot of people using the m-audio card with few complaints. recommended it to a friend recently and he is very happy.

just a thought....are you sure that the computer doesn't have a 'game port' that can be used for midi? A lot of computers have sound on the motherboard and a 'game port' for midi.

I have a 2496, and while I have had my share of problems with it (posted here) I think those problems have mostly to do with my own rather complicated hardware setup. It seems to be a pretty good card.
