Yo d00d alright yo this is whatz up first you is gonna have ta tell us what you wantz to be d0in with yer recording stufffffff. I iz guessin yous wants to be trackin' down some smack ass rap dope shit - sweeeeeeet man!! I'z can offer youz a little advice - Set the computer and monitor speakers (or whatever you're listening from) in a symmetrical portion of your room (ie. In the middle of one of the shortest walls). If you've got monitors, set them up at a 60 degree angle from eachother and you (forming an isosceles triangle). This is the first step - secondly, if you want to go as far as acoustic treatment for your room - You'll need to control a wide range of frequencies (do NOT throw up egg crates or foam on your walls - if only this) - by this I mean bass treatment (in the form of bass traps) and a combination of variating-thickness acoustic foam or something similar to handle the mid and high frequencies. After you've absorbed most of the reverberant waves (via this absorption method) - you may consider going further and diffusing different wave frequencies using foam (or any other rigid material) with a jagged or "random" face. Basically, you want to deflect the sound waves coming at it into a million different directions to disperse the waves equally about the room and keep them from building up (or down) in form of peaks or troughs in the waves. Most diffusion panbels are effective against the high or mid frequencies - but diffusing low frequencies is much more problematic. Basically, the thicker and denser the foam (or whatever), the lower the frequencies absorbed. You can look around in other sections for methods on creating diffusion or absorption methods for these problematic low frequencies. You should start at www.ethanwiner.com/acoustic.html

Though, by the looks of it - I think you might only be able to afford a good vocal mic - that's the FIRST step!! (Oh, and a good sound card to record into [not some crappy stock card - but a real recording sound card, check out www.zzsounds.com for pc recording interfaces]).

Good luck, in whatever it is you're doing.
