I want to record my band. Rock band with 4 musicians (guitars, drum, bass and vocal).
I want to track each istrument separately, drum first ( we'll try to play with at least the singer guitarist and the bass player to get a good vibe).

Is this a good choice for my budget or should I consider something else?

soundcard:

Presonus Firestudio project (1st choice) or
Presonus FP 10

I would add a PRESONUS HP4 HP 4 Channel Headphone Amp to be able to use more than 1 set of headphones

DAW

Both are coming withCubase LE 4 but the firestudio got a newer version.

Either...
Cubase LE 4
Cubase 5 (is it worth the 200$?)
Reaper (60$ is it good?) I downaoded it, I'll try it when I receive my soundcard.

I'm on windows 7 64 or Vista 64 (so no protools...)
Got 6 gigs of memory
2 1TB SATA hardrive + 1 1TB external USB hard drive.
Quad q6600
I also bought M-audio studiophiles Bx5a deluxe monitors

Hello webstersp

First off the..

"Presonus Firestudio project (1st choice) or
Presonus FP 10"

Are not sound cards, they are A/D converters, they take a analog signal and covert it to digital , and transmitte it to your computer via fire wire, thats if you have firewire on your PC.

How many track you you want to record at once ?

If your tring to record say pratice, you will need at least

1 on vocal
1 on guitar
1 on bass
2 to 4 at least on drums

that would mean you need atleast 5 mic's with cords to record the instuments, plus stands, then a A/D converter (with pre amps), to convet it to the PC.

I want to track each intrument one by one but to get a good groove I'll play guitar and sign and our bass player will play when we're gonna track the drums to get a good vibe.

I want the drums to sound as good as possible so if I need 6 or 8 mics for the drums I'll use them. Then for guitar bass and vocals it depends, maybe 2 on the guitar amps and one to capture the sound in the room. We want to test many different options and take our time to get the best sound possible.

What is the difference between a sound card and a A/D converter?

(I have firewire on my computer)
