I currently have a behringer UB1832FX-Pro mixer and a rode nt-1 mic. These are hooked to my soundcard via a rca to 1/8". My recording sound ok but when i hear other people who have the rode they disgrace me lol. Should i invest in a new sound card or mic preamp. I am pretty much clueless as to what other gear would help me, or some techniques? Just help a newbie out.

hi, I cannot claim to be a pro or anything close to that, I´m also starting as you, but I would definitely recommend getting a better soundcard. I´d say it all depends on what you´re trying to do: what your aims are (one track, more than one at once...)

Arm, Ready, RECORD!!!!!!!!!!

what do your patch cables look like. I know it sounds stupid and basic, but they can make a big difference in the final sound. electrical tape is a big, BIG, no-no. gold or silver to 1/8, and is everything totally connected the whole way (don't laugh, i've had that happen before.)

i would defiantly say that the soundcard is the weakest part of your signal chain. Any soundcard that you have to connect by 1/8 inch cables is not ment for recording. Also as far as I have seen its better to go out of the 1/4 inch outs of your mixer into the soundcard. Those other people with the rode mic that your hearing also have a lot more experince recording... and a lot more knowledge and hours logged on the equiptment they are using.
