I'm recording to a run-of-the-mill IDE hard drive using a Gadget Labs 8/24 soundcard and Samplitude and Sound Forge software. I own a few mixers, so I'm sending quality signal and level in, but I always have a hiss in my recordings. I've ruled out the soundcard as the culprit, because I had identical hiss with two different cards. I've tried repositioning my card to other slots - but same hiss prevails. A friend tells me that the PC's power supply is often the culprit -is this true, and how do I make it not sound like a friggin' snake? All help is appreciated - Marcus

have you tried adjusting the eq...and check volume levels from source AND everywhere else...and do you get the same hiss from a direct line in? If not, it would be a mixer thing...gibs

Have you tried adjusting eg and volume levels from source AND everywhere else....and then if that doesn't help, try recording direct and see if you still get hiss, if you don't, it mean the prob is the mixer, and at least you'd narrow it down that much...gibs
(sorry about the almost double post...I screwed up the editing process...lol....)

Hi there Marcus. Anyone here who has listened to my mp3 posts knows that I am no expert at getting rid of hiss, but I think I may have something small to contribute here:

Try this -

Plug a pair of headphones directly into the out of your soundcard. Turn the volume up a little with no music or anything playing and see if there is a hiss. On my computer there is quite a large hiss present even with the volume down low and nothing playing. It is annoying but on this particular machine I have discovered that the hiss only accompanies a signal coming out.

Here is what I mean: I mix down a song from my four track to my hard drive and then burn the song to CDr. I then go and listen to that cd. The hiss that I heard in my headphones coming out of the soundcard is not present; it only accompanies any signal coming through the analog out.

Hope this makes a little sense. Good Luck.

Tucci

thanks to gibs and tucci for the help -

I'm afraid I've already experimented with the levels you mentioned.

Tucci -
I will investigate your diagnosis a bit further. Since I don't yet have a way to mix down to anything without leaving from the analog outs on my soundcard - I can't be sure yet. In a few weeks I'll have an add-on to my card that will give me digital I/0 - maybe then I'll experience new clarity.
thanks - marcus
