Hey i have to record a piano as an assignment for school. If anyone has any suggestions as to how i should go about it i would love your input. I have various mics, 8-track recorders, 2 track recorders, etc... thanks for your help. I would also like any other sites you could direct me to that would have info on this subject because i couldnt find any.

A coincident pair of small-diaphragm condensers placed just inside the piano between the sound board and its (fully or partially open) lid will give you good results (assuming you're recording a grand piano.)

For an upright, you can mic "over the top" of the open lid. For an electronic keyboard... well hopefully I don't have to tell you that one! :)

another question, i also need to record a violin and i cant find any methods to do that either. also thank you bvaleria.

For violin...

Place the mic on-axis to the front face of the instrument... Your actual distance will depend on acoustics and the style of the player but I'd recommend 3'-6' with placement over and slightly in fron t of the player.

Distance miking will give you a mellow, well-rounded tone and close-miking may end up sounding scratchy with mild nasal quality (again, depending on the instrument and talent.)

???

Hey, I don't really see how this has anything to do with Alesis products. I am going to close this thread and move it to the Recording Techniques Forum. I will leave this here for a day then delete it.
