I'm looking to buy a laptop within the next few weeks. I'm going to be running 3 or 4 Mandala pads into Battery for a home drum recording studio and need something powerful enough to run samples with low latency. So I definitely need something with at least 2 gigs of ram and a dual core processor. Since I'm going to be taking this out to gigs I need something with a long battery life, a 15.4" screen, and light weight for extra portability. Without including audio interface I'm looking to spend under $1500, but I have a few questions first. Should I buy now or wait until June when Montevina is released? Should I buy a barebone and build my own? And which company makes better laptops? I've been out of the pre-built PC market for some time and I'm pretty lost about who to buy a notebook from. And also, I have little to no idea on setting up a laptop for this, audio interface wise (the Mandala connects through USB). What do I need to get? I'd like to spend as little as possible without sacrificing quality or low latency.

I figured out what laptop I'm going for, but it's a Vista so no M-audio. Who else makes good USB interfaces?

I'm stuck between two models, the ASUS M50 Series M50Sa-X1 (4 gigs of ram, but needs Vista to recognize the 4th gig) and the ASUS M50 Series M50Sv-A1 (3 gigs of ram and better graphics card, but the graphics card doesn't matter to me). I can go with M-audio, but I'd have to give up a gig a memory. Since the better graphics card doesn't make a difference to me a new question is formed. Is an M-Audio product worth losing a gig of ram?
