Hey all. First off, I have a few questions on recording in general!

1) What sound card and mixer would you recommend? What are the industry standards for these? (Akin to how the Shure SM57/SM58 are) I'm looking into mixers with 16 channels (the Mackie VLZ 1642 PRO) and it says it has 10 mic pres. I don't understand why it doesn't have 16, for every channel?

2) Having Cakewalk, a nice soundcard, and a 16 channel Mackie mixer, do I have the materials for creating professional quality recordings?

3) How do I set it up in Cakewalk, so the metronome isn't a closed MIDI hi-hat, but a REAL sounding metronome?

Thanks, guys!

Welcome to the forum...

1. No standard. It's vary depend on budget, quality you seek, and the goal you expected. But most of our though is how many input/output will you need, would you use SoundFont things, etc... The mic, also vary. many use just take SM58 or Rhode NT, while other will suggest Newman or Senheiser... 10 Mic pre, because 1604 is a simple mixer, they don't expect the user to use more than 10 at a time. Think economist. Why put 16 if they just use below 10. Need more ? buy higher level one.

2. Yes... How about your room ? But most of all, you need an experience, and knowledge to deal with High quality recording. Gear is not guarantee to get better result.

3. You can change the note chased to metronome, my fave is cowbells (G#3) on Standard MIDI drums.

Thanks for the answers! My question is, say if you were to use 16 channels on the Mackie mixer, would 6 of them be without mic pre's? What would you recommend as a mixer?

Also, how do I change the note for the metronome?

Nevermind, got it. Just change the note value in metronome settings, corresponding to the MIDI kit.
