You could get a pair of C4, a 57, and either of the bass mics for $500. Check the drum forum for more ideas. There is a search function at the top to help you find what you need.

The other kick mics to check are the Audio Technica ones - the ATM25 and the Pro25. I've only used the D112, but people write stunning reviews of the ATM25 in particular.
