Yeah, those are both good options. Not sure what the exchange rate is these days, but those prices look a little steep. The 4040 is $299 US and the SM7B is about $320-350 US.

Get em used if you can. Mics tend to be very overpriced in Canada...And I've bought lots of gear from LA and I wish I had been wiser then and waited to buy stuff used or somewhere else! LA is always overpriced in my opinion. If you're local in Mississauga, there's a place along Lakeshore a little east of LA called Revolution...check em out first.

I tried those guys, I walked in there and was turned off right away.....it looked and smelled like my gandmother's basement. When I went to L.A. Music they helped me set it up, I had nothing but good experiences with them. Very Helpful.

I used to go to L&M for everything but discovered LA. L&M is overpriced in my opinion.

Mics are a preference

Hello:

I work with many mics all the way from sure sm 57 and sm 58 the work horses of the stone age. To berhinger condenser large diaphrams, and an array of chinese tube mics. I have been buying mics for twenty years and the chinese mics lately are supreme in quality and price. Lets face it a blue mic can cost you 3000 dollars when i can buy a mic that is the same thing for 200 dollars. To me its like either buying a name brand for way to much or trying something new for one tenth of the price. There are many micing possibilitys but to start you need a few instrumant mics and a good vocal mic. The tube condensor large diaphram is a great vocal mic ribbon condensor to pick upcymbals and sounds from farther away. Then your work horse sm57 or 58 for close micing. There are allot of different ways to do this but this will give you a great start and you can buy all these mics for under 500 dollars.

Have a great day

Nvm guys I went with the Rode NTK.

got it from www.lamusic.ca they say It's Canada's largest online music store. The site was good and I trust them.

This is my first time doing it online, I usually go to the store, I'll tell you all how it works out.

i really didnt wanna buy from the states and get stuck with duties and have to go through customs.

There's a number of good options and you've already named a couple of them. AT don't seem to make a single bad mic! Ideally you'd find one that suits your voice, but failing that you could go for the reasonably neutral-sounding option. So an ADK Hamburg or Vienna, Joemeek JM47a, SP C1 or T3, Shure SM7, MXL V67G, SE2200A or whatever might really suit you ... or some like an AT4040 or AT4050 could be bought to hedge your bets a little (and who knows, they may be the best for your voice).

It's a bitch but try to listen to some if possible so you know what suits you best, failing that trawl the MP3 clinic here for singers with similar voices to you and take note of what mics they used and whether they sound good or not.

I just want to add to this that the arrangement can make a huge impact on the effectiveness of the mic, even with the same singer. I've been loving my AT4050 for the last couple months but last night I was working on a new recording and the 4050 just wasn't sitting right. I tried a few things and ended up using an RE20, which I actually never liked before. Same preamp, same singer. I never had this experience before so I thought I'd share.

Worthwhile for definite and thanks for adding that.

I almost always choose my T3 for lead vocals now but backing vocals have to be done on a variety of mics for tonal variety with the same singer.

I reckon the AT4050 is close to being the most usable vocal mic across a wide range of voices though, as it sounds like you've been finding.
