I have a bunch of decent mics, a couple of at4033's, a couple of gt tube mics, and a few other other LDC's. I also have a few sm58 etc. type mics. I know its all subjective, but I like what I have and have gotten good results. Besides a ribbon mic, which I am still researching what to get in terms of quality and what I can afford, I believe I need a couple of SDC's to round out my mic collection. I have read a lot on this forum and elsewhere as to what I should get in terms of what I can afford. I have narrowed it down to either two AKG c1000's or a matched pair of Studio Projects c-4's. Enough of you folks have said that the rodes sdc's were overpriced for what you get, and the mxl's seem a bit too cheap when I can afford a somewhat upgrade. I will be using them for a lot of purposes including learning what to use them on in place of my LDC's. Any help would be appreciated. If you have other mic suggestions, thats fine too. I really dont want to spend more than $350 for the two, and I'm fine with buying used.
I am leaning towards the c-4's.

thanks,

I am a fan of the C-4's. I have heard nothing in that price range anywhere near as good. That said, I prefer AKG C451, but they cost a good deal more. I am not a fan of the C1000S, I think they are wonderful nightsticks.-Richie

I have used both C1000's and C4's.
I don't own the C1000's any more.
The Studio Projects C4's are way better.

Keep leaning, because you're leaning in the right direction. The C4 is a much better microphone, overall, than the AKG C1000s. Plus, the C4 pair comes with two capsules, cardioid and omni. The C4s are good mics, even very good once price is considered.

I'd say get a couple 'a Oktava MC012's from the Sound Room.

I've just find them to be extremely useful and versatile. The work well on just about anything. Detailed . . . fairly neutral, and never seem to sound overly bright or grating.

Everyone should have a pair.

I don't really disagree with Chessrock. I use the Oktavas as well as the C-4's. The Oktavas I have are less neutral (more colored) than my C-4's, but one or the other will work on almost anything. Again, price point becomes an issue. At $99 a pair, the Oktavas were a no-brainer. At $454 a pair, with just the cardioid capsules, and additional capsule pairs at $130, I think the C-4's are a better buy. I just aquired a pair of KM184's, which are kind of the mics the C-4's are trying to be, but I'm keeping the C-4's, because they are my only SD omnis.-Richie

I have a C1000S I don't like and CanopuS posted some cracking samples with C4s the other week - a pair of C4s and a DMP3 in his living room or something. They sounded great, but I haven't heard the Oktavas. The others to consider are SE Electronics SE1s, they've gotten some good reviews and I think you can get omni heads for them too. Worth a listen because they're so cheap (£69 each here).
