Hey I'm in a band and I want to get a Tom Delonge-ish (BLink 182) sound on my guitar, and I am totally lost on how to do it. Delonge plays on a Triple Rectifier with the dirty channel cranked up to ten through mesa boogie cabinets. What is a cheaper way of approximating this sound? I would really appreciate it. This sound will mainly be used for lead, I am using a DOD FX-69b Grunge distortion pedal for rhythm tracks. How can I get this sound?

Mesa Boogie sells a pedal with the Recto tone about $300 I believe. My little brother had one and it was "that" sound.Nicely built with diamondplate construction and a tube or two onboard.Three separate tones available if I recall.
I've got a j-station ($150) and it has a convincing mesa boogie sound also. Also pod does it,but they are about $300 I think.

what is your guitar and amp? Believe it or not they have a pretty big influence on your overall tone.

a play a fat strat w/ bridge hb over a fender twin 12" tubed amp

Mesa boogie V-twin pedal about $150-200 used, (or the vtwin rackmount, which is a littl more expensive, but Ive never used it). The vtwin pedal is amazing if you like the mesa crunch tone. Its got an amazing clean channel as well. Very tone rich.

If by 'cheaply', you mean you dont want to spend any money and use your current gear, I dont know that the DOD grunge box is ever gonna sound like an overdriven mesa. If it could though (and it might be possible...)we would definatley need your amp and guitar models as well.
My premier suggestion would be fuck with your rig until you get the best possible sound you can get (to your ears) and dont stress about not being able to sound like million dollar recordings that are using $2000 amps. If Kurt Cobain had been concerned about sounding like someone else, we never would have had "the grunge sound", or the DOD grunge pedal for that matter.
Good luck,
Todd

Musician's Friend sells a blink 182 signature guitar. It's probably cheap, because that would be the 'punk' thing to do, and we all know how blink 182 likes to say they are so punk.

(sorry if this post seems venom-infused. I really have no vested interest in blink 182, though there are many guitarists that deserve a signature series more. Maybe The Blink guy gets one because no one else uses fender guitars. heh)

well I believe I have found my sound...I have the dirty channel on the fender twin tubed amp turned all the way up, and the highs up the lows halfway and the mids all the way, with the gain on 8, and I'm now playing a mexican fender fat strat. I think it sounds awesome!!

It goes to 11...

All the knobs on my buddy's Soldano Decatone go to 11.

That's one louder...

:)
