Hey guys,

I am going to build a recording desk/rack to complement the built in desk/bookshelf that is already at my house. I've been inspired checking out the custom built consoles some of ya'll have done, so now I need some help. Below I am posting the links to the basic plans. Please check them out and give me some ideas. I'm going to use choice pine probably and stain it oak to match the wood already in the room.

I want it to be functional and look professional, but I don't have large funds, so I'm trying to do it on a small budget (that's why I'm using pine instead of oak).

Please give me some cool ideas and advice, especially on dimensions or layout, etc.

Thanks!

Jeremy,

It looks like a pretty good plan. My only comment is that the area you designated for an opening for a chair is kind of narrow. Personally, I'd make that area 36" wide to give you a tiny bit more room to manuever.

Also, are you planning on using steel rack rails or a simple wood attachment for the rack section? If you decide to use wood I would recommend you splurge on that part and buy real oak (a 1x2 will suffice). The oak is a hardwood whereas the pine is a softwood and will not hold your heavier gear quite as well as the oak will. If you go for an attachement like this, be sure that your 19" measurement is between the sides, not including the sides as you have drawn.

Have fun building.

Darryl,

Thanks for the help! I did just measure the opening for one of my other desks and it is 36". I also just noticed that I drew the 19" on the outside instead of the inside.

I really would like to have racks on both sides but the way it has to butt up against the preexisting desk, it wouldn't be simple for me to just turn and slide under it.
