What a pain in the ass.
I need "Windows XP service pack 1 or better" according to this softwaremI am trying to install to make my new Firewire interface work.
Is there a direct link somewhere where I can download sp2 or something, and the related patch to fix the firewire issue that sp2 has?
I'm looking on the microsoft site and there are so many different things that I'm not sure what I'm really getting.

Is the firewire issue just a sp2 firewire issue or an issue with your specific hardware? What interface are you using?

All you essentially need is SP1, if that's what's required by your new software/hardware. This is from Microsoft's site:

"If you are not running Windows XP SP1, install SP1a to make sure that you have the latest security and reliability updates for Windows XP. Install any appropriate security updates and hotfixes that are already released or that will be released after SP1 on Windows XP-based computers that are running SP1a. Windows Update will continue to offer the same set of updates for Windows XP-based computers that are running either SP1 or SP1a.

To determine if you are running Windows XP SP1, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. If "Service Pack 1" appears under System, you are already running Windows XP SP1. There is no benefit to installing SP1a if you are already running Windows XP SP1. Microsoft does not recommend that you install SP1a if you are already running SP1.

Windows XP SP1a is the same as Windows XP SP1 except that the Microsoft virtual machine (VM) is removed in SP1a."

If I were you, I'd just grab SP1a express installation from here (link in the middle of the page labled 'Microsoft Update':

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/express.mspx

But, If I were me, which I am, I'd grab the network installations for SP1 and SP2. Then I'd proceed to making a plain jane copy of Windows XP, a copy with SP1 integrated, and a copy with SP1/SP2 integrated. :) That way I'd have all three, just in case.

........hope that helps.

Allright, with the express install I have to do it to THIS computer right?
Problems:
No modem in DAW
DAW in different location, also no phone line at location
This computer has to be opened up and hooked into my burned to make the copy, which is fine, I just need to get a service pack on the desktop to where Ican burn a CD.
This one CAME with a disk that has windows and service pack 1a on it, but I cant figure out how toget the service pack off the sdisk alone. I think it will refuse to let me do it on anything other than a dell anyway.
This sucks huge balls. Huge. Balls.

Yes, the express install is for the pc you are on right now. To put it on your daw, you will need the network installation. The network install can be used on any machine running XP Home or Pro. There should'nt be any issue with the pc being a Dell.

Just download the network install, burn it to a cd, pop the cd in your daw and install it.

........sorry, I missed that bit about the Dell cd. You meant the disc you have is the one that came with your Dell. :)

If you have a regular windows xp cd, I'd consider making a copy of it with sp1 and/or sp2 slipstreamed.

No way. That is over 130 mb big for the network... that will take me days on dial up.
There absolutely has to be a spot where I can download sp1 to the desktop and take it with me. THat is totally ridiculous if I cant, it would not make any sense at all.

Damnit. There are so many pages of CRAP on he microsoft site. I will commit mass homicide in 30 seconds.

Yea, the network install is pretty hefty but it's the only way you're going to be able to install the service pack on your daw. Maybe you can go to a friend's house that has a fast connection and download it.

..........or, if your local library has a pc with a burner, you could do it there.

Have you heard of this new thing called broadband? It's the wave of the future. No waiting days to download large files, not robot noises when you want to get online........... :D Sorry, I had to.......

Your biggest help right now would be making me understand WHY I cant download the smaller one into a file on my desktop. Sounds like a pile of crap to me.
I guess I'll ride across town for a copy of a simple update. What a suckass thing to have to do.
Thanks for your help.

I'm not 100% positive why the network install is so big but I'm guessing that it is made that way so that it can be used with many different builds of XP. I think the express install checks your current build and gives you only the files that need updating. I guess the network install would be kind of bloated because it will cover alot of bases.

Yes, but check to make sure that SP1 is'nt already on your DAW. If it is, installing SP1a will be pointless.

Its not, I have the original XP disk that I bought, and the interface software that I'm trying to install wont install saying that "windows sp1 or better is required" so I'm assuming just from that alone that its not on there.
This mega sucks. I need to kick something.

The express install does check your build and whatnot, but once it does, it still has to download the rest of the cab files for the service pack install. It still totals up to well over 100MB, it just does it more easily and in the background of the computer you're installing on...In short, the express install cannot be used on a machine without an internet connection.

Yea...............what he said. Nice to know.

Yes, the reason the network install is so huge is because it will apply service pack to ANY XP version.

I think your best bet is to go to a friends place who has high speed and download SP2!

With SP2, just make sure you disable the firewall and other crap that it installs.

The SP will not install if you have a pirate copy of XP with a cracked or otherwise bogus serial number. If this is your case, save yourself the grief of obtaining the SP only to find it won't work.

I run XpPro with SP1 only, because my Aardvark Q10 drivers were written prior to the release of SP2, which breaks hell out of them. My DAW is dedicated so I have no antivirus, nor any need for the eye candy and spyware stuff found in SP2.

SP1 is a significant bug-fix service pack, and should be present. The difference between SP1 and SP1a is the lack of the java virtual machine in 1A (If I remember right). Microsoft got its panties in a bunch and removed java support starting with SP1a. Download the latest JVM directly from Sun, but only if you need it for your recording software. Otherwise, it is just another chunk of wasted cpu cycles.

SP2 is far too large to download, unless you have broad band, and all night to do it. You can order the SP on CD from Microsoft.
