I have a major problem I dearly hope someone can help me with.

I have recently purchased a Lucid Word clock to drive my 2 Delta 1010s. I had hoped that even half the hype of how much it would help would be true.

Something is not right.

When I choose the Delta's internal clock everything is dead quiet, when I choose the Lucid I get a distinctive oscillating digital noise .(this is without any programs being run)

I chose a prerecoded project for playback, I listened using the Deltas clock and became familiar with the sound. I then kicked in the Lucid. The music DID tighten up but in the background was that oscillating sound.

I opened a new project and recorded and the recorded track was heavily tainted with the noise.

I have double checked all places to make sure everything was set to receive from the external box and was at the right sample rate.
The only thing that came to mind was either the unit is defective, or perhaps the BNC cables I have are the wrong kind.

The cables I bought are Videoflex 75 "professional video coax cable" From Connectronics. I believe them to be 75 ohm cables. But can the fact that they are meant for video possibly make them bad for word clock use?

It almost seems the word clock signal is being corrupted or something.

I don't know... I am severly distressed and could use some guidance.

Sounds like a clocking mismatch... when you use an external clock, every device down the chain has to be a slave to that clock.

IN your case, it sounds like something in the chain is trying to be the master clock, even though your Lucid is. Check the settings of all your devices, including internal soundcards... I'm 99.9% sure you've forgotten to check or uncheck a parameter somewhere to defer to external clock timing.

Thanks for your quick response.
I'll look into the internal sound card set up. The only thing I have in the computer is the Deltas and an old Gadget Labs Card (I may pull ).

So do you think the Cables are OK to use?

Tom

If they're video grade 75 ohm shielded cables they should be fine.

Mike,
Thanks!
At least that is one variable I can eliminate.

My Thoughts are these:

a) My older backup card is a Gadget Labs 24 bit card that wont allow external clocking. Although I am not using it, It very well may be mucking things up, so I am going to pull it and try again.

b) I have been doing some searches and find some posts back in 2000 - 2001 where people were having problems clocking the Delta 1010s to word clock. It seems some (all?) had to be sent into M Audio for a minor mod to be able to be externally clocked. I find this hard to believe! Why would they even INCLUDE a word clock in and out if it did not work? I am hoping this problem was limited to the earlier runs of Deltas.

Anyway... I appreciate the input. Any other experiances that may help I would appreciate the posts.

I do have an inquiry in at M Audio and I know them to be a good bunch of folk. Hopefully I'll receive word from them soon as well. I'll post their answer for others that may end up in the same boat as me.

Well,
I have pulled the old soundcards and unloaded old drivers and only have the 2 Deltas. I am still haveing the same problem Identically with both the old Delta 1010 and the new one. I have double checked around and my cables seem good. Soo ... I guess it is up to hearing from M-Audio.

I hope to have this resolved soon.

If anyone else has any Ideas, I'm up for it.

Tom
