I need to create a home recording 'station' - to digitally record some guitar rock....

I want it to be under $500
it needs to be able to mix atleast 4 tracks, it needs to record digitally reasonably well... i plan on using mostly used equipment i can get off ebay or scrounge

I want suggestions on
-mics
-mixer
-recording device and make (DAT or mini disk? - has to be digital)

help is greatly appricated !

For a mic, the easiest choice for guitar rock is the Shure SM-57. As far as a digital recorder, your going to have a hard time finding one in your price range. You might consider getting a 200 dollar digital recording style sound card for a PC if you have one. Otherwise the only choice would be a used HD recorder or worst case a minidisk multi tracker.
Some Examples.

Remember you will require some cords and misc items.

Thanks a lot for the info atom...

one thing though - i can do a post edit on my computer.... is a mini disk really that bad quality?

Yo Rosy:

A mini disc unit isn't "that bad." You just won't get CD quality sound but you will get a nice sound that you can learn to manipulate into "close" to CD sound.

I still use my Yam MD8 while I'm using and learning my Yam 2816. The sound difference between the two units is VERY NOTICEABLE. The 2816 has more headroom than a convention for bald folks.

But, check out as many possibilities as you can and then get in there are record.
