Help! I Don't Know What I'm Doing Wrong

So... I decided to scrounge up some money to get some cheap stuff to record with instead of using my internal computer mic. I keep trying to hook everything up and I get no sound. I tried plugging the mixer into my amp to see if it was just the connection between the mixer and the computer but every time I turned on my amp it make some really loud bad sound.
Like I said, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm just trying to use Garageband since it's free and easy. I have a MacBook Pro and I am using a Behringer U-Control UCA202 that plugs into the USB and connects my mixer (Behringer Xenyx 802) from the CD/Tape area. Plugged into the mixer I have an MXL 990 mic in the Mic Preamp 1 and a guitar plugged into the Line In 2. I also have an Alesis NanoVerb with the Left output plugged into the Left Stereo Aux Return and the Left Input on the Alesis Plugged into the FX Send on the Mixer.
If anyone could let me know what to do I would be really grateful.

I'm not familiar with your gear but I'd suggest trying the simplest possible setup first. Just a guitar (or mic) and the mixer and USB interface. You'll need to make sure that the computer can recognise it and that the settings in Garageband are right too. I don't know what all the settings are for your gear but at the very least you'll need to check that your gear shows up in the "sound" section in the computer's System Preferences and that you've made the right selections for sound input and output there, plus that the Garageband/Preferences/Audio section is set properly, and then that the right "input Source" (bottom right hand corner in GB) has been picked. You'll also need to check that monitoring is on or you may get sound in but not out again. Miss any of those steps and it usually won't work, it's not all just plug and play. Have you set any of those things yet? Good luck. :)
 
Search Google for "Garageband recognize interface" or similar and check that you have GB set up correctly.
