I'm currently at a music college (A level standard), which has 3 studios, equipped with Allen & Heath Saber desks, MOTU 24 I/O interfaces, Mac G4s, and using Cubase SX.
So basically, I can do recording - the thing is, I'm now looking to invest in a small home setup. I'm also very interested in Live Sound, and what I'd like to know is - (NEWBIE ALERT) can I get a mixing desk that will work for live AND studio stuff? If so, what would all you seasoned producer-folks reccomend?

Whatever you can afford, really.

For recording you want a desk that has direct outs on as many channels as possible. For live you want as many aux sends as you can get and some busses, good EQ's, etc. If you're also mixing on the desk (not just tracking) you'll want all that stuff, too.

So what is your budget?

Welcome aboard!

I don't really have a budget, i tend to fix myself on what i what to buy, then save the money for it later, I'm only 16 though, so I'm looking at under £500 really, and at the moment I record with over-dubs on every instrument and mix in Cubase, so I won't need too many inputs.

I was just wondering whether the lack of groups on most live desks means they can't be used for recording, and vice versa, but I guess you could just send everything to group 1&2 (live) and use them as stereo outs....

Just about any desk you get can be used for live or studio. Quality and functionality vary with price. Subgroups are handy for both. Direct outs (as someone noted already) are useful for multitrack recording. On my desk I have main out, plus two subgroups. That gives me the equivalent of six separate outputs. I don't have direct outs, but I can use the inserts for another couple if I need the full eight inputs that my sound card provides.

Cheers for your help everyone!

I was thinking of getting Cubase SX3 and a Tascam US-122 Audio interface to start recording while I'm busy begging on the streets for the mixer - any objections / better suggestions?

Delta 10/10 w/m-powered Protools, Logic or cubase. All relitivy inexpensive. Personally I would use m-powered ProTools. Thats my opinion.

How much am I looking at for the delta 10/10? (GBP or US dollar please)

US$

$250-$300 new

$100-$200 on Ebay

They are great for the price. 8 1/4 bal ins and outs. Works well with most software. If you want ProTools you can use that or maybe a M-Box. Those 2 are frequintly on E-Bay. For the most part E-Bay is good for getting this stuff cheap. When I upgrade That is where my stuff goes. I take care of my equiptment. :D

See, I was thinking about using the US-122 before i get a desk, then upgrading to a MOTU 24 I/O... then i saw the MOTU price tag  - i think i'm looking at the delta 1010 more seriously now! Can I plug a guitar straight into it like I could on the Tascam?
