The biggest problem ,I think, is that I am driving. That being said...

I have a dual delta 1010 card set up on a P-3 win 98se system, and I was trying to update my drivers to the latest configuration. I downloaded the driver at my internet computer, burned the .exe file to a CD and installed it on my Studio computer.

I then went to the Device manager to update the driver, but never could find where the driver unpacked all the files. I checked temp folders, I did searches for .inf files, for .drv files for "M-Audio", everything. The only thing I could find was the old driver. So like an idiot I uninstalled every thing including my old drivers and reinstalled the new, but I still cant track where they are being unpacked. I did searches by file dates and everything but cant find the right file that my computer recognizes as a driver file.

So now I am hosed... I am in the middle of mastering a dudes album and cant even get my audio program to open because it does not see an audio card.

Any one with ideas? I am a complete computer numbskull so talk slowly and distinctly.

You said you burned a exe file? was this a zipped archive?

What driver version are you trying to install. The latest driver (48a) is not recommended by M-Audio for Win 98.

I believe 42 is the latest one which they recommend for Win98.

Also, you need to reboot after installing the drivers. Upon the reboot Windows will find the "new" hardware (Delta 1010) and install it. My recollection is that you will then need to reboot once again for everything to work.

The one I downloaded was the one listed for win 98se.
It downloads as a .exe program which self installs using a instashield app.

I rebooted after every step, it says it finds the hardware and installs then finds the software and installs, but when you look at the driver level it still lists the old driver. I thought, well... I'l just leave the old driver then... But when you try to use the soundcard it throws up a message stating.. "expecting newer version of driver than found, please update drivers" So I keep going through this endless loop.

I have an email in to M-Audio, but it usually takes a few days for a response. Any other idea on hoe to fix this, I would sure appreciate it.

Why did you burn it to a CD??. If it´s an EXE file just double click it and it will install.

My studio computer is not on the internet, so I had to download it from one computer and transfer it to the studio.

It should self-install. I remember having to boot more times than I thought I should have to, but other than that it went pretty smooth. That, however, was on Win XP with Win XP drivers.

What version of the driver are you installing, and what version is showing up in Device Manager?

BTW, the executable file also removes the old drivers in the process of installation. So the old drivers should not be on your system any longer. Is it possible the .exe file is corrupted. Have you tried downloading it again, or downloading an earlier version?

D,
I think I will download it again and try it fresh.

tmix. i dont know if this is your problem. but what multitrack software are you using ? could it be a directx issue in windows ? it might be worth checking with the manufacturer of your multitrack software.
maybe the new drivers are making a call in a programmers subroutine somewhere in the driver and having a version of an older directx.
i dont KNOW if this is the problem. just something to investigate possibly.
peace.

Manning1 et al,

Thanks for all the input.
I got the situation resolved. A member that goes by EMERIC gave me step by step instructions that saved the day.

I ended up erasing all files from my temp folders and uninstalled my cards. I then erased all files anywhere on my computer that had any association to M-Audio. I then rebooted, when the computer tried to install the hardware and could not find any drivers anywhere it gave me an unknown device warning. I then opened the new download from M-Audio (which extracted to my now clean temp folder) and I updated the drivers from the device manager. After a reboot all was well.

Whew! I can breathe again.

Manning,
I use Samplitude, and I did check out the direct x idea. I have dirx 8a? (I think) and it was a recent enough version for the software to work with the driver.

I appreciate all the imput.

Thanks again.
