help building surprise studio for bf

@ ms. needadvice... I meant to say earlier that I think it's very cool that you want to do this for your bf. My wife's idea of a surprise gift is asking me what mic she should buy me... The surprise is when she doesn't actually buy anything.... lol.

Lol! I just hope I do a good job in picking what he has in his imagination when he talks about building a studio. I don't want to ask him cos he will get suspicious.

Music equipment can be very difficult to choose - so I would recommend you buy local (a lot of local stores will price match the big internet retailers like musicians friend) and make sure they have a good return policy and keep the receipts - if you talk to the store manager and let them know the deal I am sure they will be happy to oblige - that way if there is a piece of equipment he loves, he can swap out if he wants to - the way i shop and research equipment it would be impossible for my wife to pick out the same gear I would buy :) (and we can basically read each others minds)

one question nobody seemed to ask.... what software/system does your boyfriend use when he goes home? It seems to me this would be crucial to know. i.e. If he uses Pro Tools, then it would be best to set up a Pro Tools system where you're at now so that projects can be easily shared back and forth. Using different recording software than what he uses when he flies home could be extremely problematic if not impossible..... Make sure whatever you get is a "compatible" system

I have no idea but I wrote his buddy asking him about software and he told me he has it all ready for him. I'm gonna ask the names of the programs.

My bf does prefer a windows os, if that makes a difference.
 
Mics are hard to pick. It depends upon the vocalist. The AKG C 214 isn't cheap, but it's a good mic with a nice presence and around $400 (but that's cheap compared to some that people have). I'd not buy him any software -- reason is that people have such different preferences for workflow, and there's compatibility issues sometimes so it's best just to let him get that part. Once you've bought software you can't return it to 99% of stores. Monitors: the KRK Rockit 8s are $500 for the pair. KRK Rockit 6 are $400 pr. The KRK Rockit 5s are $300 pr. (8 = 8", 6 = 6", 5 = 5" woofers). These are pretty darn good monitors. There are better, but not many in this price range. If he needs an interface, the Presonus Audiobox USB or the M-Audio Fast Track Pro are between $150 and $200.

We went to best buy today and he was rambling a bit about what he wants to build. He wants FireWire in the interface. So any recommendations will be happily accepted
 
Even if a PC doesn't say it has firewire you can get a Firewire PCI card - just check the reviews or ask in the firewire forum (is there a firewire forum here?)

The comp is not the problem.. I need to find an interface w FireWire. Any recommendations?

wow thanks! I'm looking all of these up and finalizing my budget. So much I want to buy!
