Hey all,

So, here's the deal:
- I've never really written poems or music. I don't know how to play any instrument, or sing, or even read music.
- I'm currently in my third year of uni for engineering, but have an internship for a year. A program that doesn't exactly give me a lot of "free time", but I deal with it anyways.
- It occured to me that, in the past 20 years of my life, I have done nothing significant that I personally feel proud of doing. Going to school and stuff is alright, but to be honest, it feels like I did it more for my parents.
- I listen to all kinds of music. Literally anything, because I don't see the point in disliking something if I haven't given it a chance yet.
- In particular, i listen to a lot of hiphop, r&b, and rap.

So here I am, 20 years old trying to get something on his belt that he did, whether or not it turns out good in other peoples eyes. What I want is to start rapping a bit. I see and hear about people like D-pryde, Big Sean, and Wax, who constantly talk about doing what you wanna do, and this is something I 'want' to do, not something I
'have' to (unlike school).

I'm just seeking some help on where to start! I think I will start with poem writing for a bit, because a lot of my favorite songs are more poetry than anything.

From what I also noticed, a lot of good music I listen to, it's usually people who have gather inspiration due to some sort of 'crisis' in their life. The thing is, I don't have any. I know how lucky I am to not have gone through one, but I mention this because I'm wondering what else I can seek inspiration from. I'm very opinionated, especially when it comes to how the youth are being brought up, people who can't see the forest for the trees, and people who give up too easily. Do you think I can make poetry or music from this?

Also, one final note, please don't tell me that I have no chance, or that I should seek another medium. I'm tired of being told what I can't do. I'm not looking to make it big by any means, but I just want to express myself in a way I think I'd enjoy, even if it is time consuming.

Thank you, and again, I look forward to getting to know you all!

Nobody's gonna tell you u have no chance until we hear your tracks :D JK, and of course you can get inspiration from that stuff... Not giving up, fight on, protesting against upbringing, etc.. Hmmm yeah lol IDK if anyone ever thought to do music about any of that :p Being opinionated is a good plus, gets you fired up about anything, wanting to speak out, etc etc. 99.99999% chance you won't make it big, and it WILL be time consuming, dont worry about that! Get a mic and a DAW and start laying down some tracks. Welcome to the board,

Do whatever it is that makes you feel something. Find the way to express what it is you feel. Pick up a guitar, write a poem, chop down a tree. Just find your own personal inspiration in something that moves you. You cant learn what you like by not finding out for yourself. If music moves you, then pick up some instruments and see where they take you. If an instrument does not give you satisfaction, then find what it is about the music you enjoy that you can expand upon and make your personal stamp upon. You can find joy in creating music without being a player. It is definitely going to be a benefit if you at least have an understanding of the instruments tho.

Good luck to you and welcome to the forum SleepNeek. :D

You guys are so positive.

I'm gonna take the other route.

You have no chance, you should seek another medium.

sorry had to... :laughings: kid, I kid!

Rap on brother! Rap on! Do what makes ya feel good...

we will be happy to help you out along your musical journey. :)

As far as not having any experiences or 'crisis' to write from or cull inspiration, I always say a good artist is someone who can write, sing, paint, act, or in any other way, convey something they know nothing about. Writing about what you know is a good place to start, but writing about what you don't know is the next level.

Conventional songs are not really poetry. The only thing in common is rhyme schemes. But HipHopRap might be different and more like poetry, so maybe poetry is a good place to start for you. You can find beats to license online. One place I know is soundclick and there are others. Use those to write to.

Good luck, have fun, welcome.

Ummmm I wasnt THAT positive, I told him he had a in 10,000,000 chance of getting big. How negative do I have to be to satisfy you?!

This: You have no chance, you should seek another medium. :laughings:

I was only joking G - that was what Suprstar would have to post to be negative enough to satisfy me.

Oh sorry, I was just talking to the OP! As in, who cares if you can't play any instruments or haven't written songs? We all start somewhere ;)

Start doing a lot of hard drugs--- meth, heroin, bath salts.

You'll soon have all kinds of crazy shit to write about.

Especially the bath salts. You'll be fighting the people that live in the bathroom tiles when they tell you to keep down the noise......!!

Man, REALLY, what is your problem? The truth is, YOU DON'T HAVE ONE. You are more than half-way through a university program that has better-than-average employment prospects, you have- by your own admission- had no major problems in your life, and you worry that you have not done anything "significant" or "for yourself" in just twenty years??!?

You don't sing, don't play an instrument, never written music or poetry. You are in an ENGINEERING program. You do what you are told... dude, you are NOT a creative person. DEAL with it. You never WILL be a creative person. Creative people get into trouble BECAUSE they are creative- one of the things they create- one of the things they can not HELP but create, is trouble for them selves. THAT'S where the "crisis" comes from. NOBODY, sane or not, WANTS that to keep happening. Do not go out LOOKING for trouble- the kind you will find will NOT get you where you THINK you want to go, and if you can't see that now, or take someone's advise about that, the only other way you will realize that is to see it from the other side- and then it will be too late- you will have wrecked your neat, orderly life, and have NOTHING to replace it.

By all means, continue to appreciate and enjoy listening to music. Finish school, get a job where you wear a white short-sleeve shirt and a dark tie, tweaking some valve that is down-line of a Cat tower so that some oil company can make 0.002% more profit on every barrel of oil they squeeze out of the Alaskan wilderness, get married and raise 2.5 children in a house just down the street from the one you grew up in, and enjoy your life as it going to be.

Do NOT try to become a musician. You don't have it in you, and you have no IDEA how fortunate you are. When you die, if there is a heaven, you can ask Stevie Ray, or Janice, or Blind Willie or Scott Joplin if they would have switched places with you- and they will say "Hell, YES!" and tell you that you'd have been CRAZY to want to.

Don't listen to Stevie he is an ignorant jackass that doesn't know shit from apple butter.

Storm comin'

Don't listen to Stevie he is an ignorant jackass that doesn't know shit from apple butter.
While I wouldn't say that, I too disagree with Stevieb because if you have the stirrings of some creative surge within you starting to peep out, you'll regret it till you die if you don't at least try to explore it.
Unless things take a major turn, and I'm talking ursa major here, explore music/rap/recording/poetry as a hobby if those are the stirrings you feel.
As for not having had crisis' in your life worth writing about, believe me, you'll not be saying that when you're 30. Think of these last 20 years as the calm before the storm.

Huh. Typical shit from you, asshole.

The typical shit is spewing from you and your "know-it-all" attitude, when in fact you continually prove that you know exactly dick about any topic you expound upon.

STFU already. Nobody around here needs your ignorant negative stupid advice on ANY topic.

Well, I won't agree with everything StevieB says, but I do agree that you definitely need to finish school and get a degree in something that will pay the bills!!!!! Music ain't gonna do that for ya, so don't even think about trying. Make music for yourself and if something more should come from it, then cool. But don't expect that to happen. In music, success is all about luck.

There's also nothing to say you can't write songs or poems about positive, upbeat things. Wordsworth did quite a good job of waxing poetic about what a lovely field of daffodils he happened to just see

I'd suggest getting a notebook, start writing down some phrases here and there that pop into your head and concepts that seem like a good idea that appeal to you. see if you can string something together

You don't have to write about truth and beauty , write fiction ... Johnny Cash never shot noone in Reno...
