Hey guys, I figured i'd make this post both a hello and a question.

I am a drummer and am interested in recording my kit. I think I just want to get one mic to record everything.. I dont have the money to get multiple mics/stands etc...

So if I wanted to make a decent recording, what kind of hardware would I need, also what type of mic? I keep reading "Condenser mic" but I don't really know what that is. Also what kind of software would be optimal to record with?

Thanks

Drums are both challenging and rewarding to record, but you really need to invest in more than just a microphone to do it.

First of all I'd say get a stereo pair so you can get a decent image of whats where in the kit, but if you insist on going mono, get a nice large diaphragm condenser like the AKG perception 220 to pick up the kit at a distance of about 6 ft. you might be surprised how cheap you can get a drum micing kit for tho, for instance shure do a PG series, its more geared at a live sound for a young band but you'll get much nicer results,

have you taught about how your going to get your sound into the computer?

for this your going to need an A/D converter or to normal people some kind of interface, theres plenty of options on the table for this one, including usb ones and a lot come with recording software again I'm going to say you'll need more than one track but who am I to tell you how to spend your money.

Finally have you put any though into the acoustics in your room?

A bad sounding room will ruin the sound of any mic no matter what the cost of it. unless of course your just using a close mic in a really dead room and soaking it in verb... but even then your gonna have issues.

Also as far as drums go your gonna get a lot of phasing issues and it WILL be worth your while studying this or your going to end up heartbroken. I've seen it happen, anyway

Welcome to the forum, enjoy looking around and don't be afraid to ask questions :)

These 2 are a couple of interesting threads from the past about capturing a drumkit with one microphone.
